Details

Deutsche Schule Melbourne is a German-English bilingual primary school in Melbourne. Our school is located in the suburb of Fitzroy North, which is about 4.5 km north of the city. We are currently a primary school offering the Foundation Year to Year 6, but from 2025 will be expanding into a secondary school by offering Year 7. We are an accredited German School Abroad – one of only two in Australia. Our curriculum consists of the Australian Curriculum and the Victorian Essential Learning Standards with adaptations from the Thuringia (German) curriculum. We take part in all Australian benchmark testing (e.g. NAPLAN) and fulfil all quality standards, which are posed on Victorian schools under the Schools Performance Framework. Our curriculum satisfies the highest standards in both Australia’s and Germany’s education systems – creating a world of future study and career opportunities for our students. Deutsche Schule Melbourne offers a bilingual education of the highest quality for all families who would like their children to be immersed in two languages. We cater not only for German, Austrian and Swiss families, but for all families who are interested in a German-English bilingual education, even those without any German-speaking background. Our school currently has around 160 students. Roughly a third of the school’s families have German, Swiss or Austrian parents, a third Australian and a third parents of other nationalities. Many of our students are not just bilingual but multilingual — meaning they already speak two or more languages at home and additionally learn the German language at school. We teach our students the German language to the equivalent of a native speaker level and help our students to realise their individual potential and become creative and confident participants in the global community. Research consistently supports the lifelong cognitive benefits of a bilingual education. But more than that, it inspires a global view on life — and a deep appreciation for cultural diversity. From 2023, Deutsche Schule Melbourne will be welcoming children in Years 3 to 5 with no prior German language skills. The DSM Accelerated Pathway gives students the language skills they need to join our school’s main immersion program within 6-18 months. But your child won’t just learn a second language. By applying learning from both Victorian and German curricula, our students develop the problem-solving and conceptual thinking skills they need to flourish in a complex world. Students will receive individualised support through staff who specialise in differentiation to prepare them for a smooth transition into the mainstream program. If your family has been thinking about a bilingual education but haven’t yet made the leap, get in touch with us. DSM is such and amazing school, with ups and downs at the school I have had an amazing experience. I’ve made life long friends that I am so grateful for. As I am now in year 8 and not having the best time at high school I realised how I didn’t appreciate the time at this amazing school. I remember thinking how badly I wanted to start high school but now I would give the world to go back to this school. I definitely recommend sending your child/children here if you want to be part of this amazing community that you will only experience here.

I used to go here and I am aware people may see my review, but I hardly care anymore I’ve heard the terrible terrible things that people have said about me since I have left. At dsm there is a lack in keeping children safe. I had multiple occasions where things were brushed aside and left unnoticed. I would come home with marks made by other students like bite marks and bruises. When I ever I spoke up I was heavily ignored. I wasn’t popular and it being a small school there wasn’t any other options. I was the only one the girls didn’t liand in a class of 14 their was only one girl group my age and they would go and tell a teacher if I tried to ever sit with them. The school are aware of these problems because I don’t just know one but 3 people who’s reviews have been taken down and so I will be screenshotting this and will write another review adding a photo attachment. I felt horrible at this school and every time I look back I cry because of how horribly I was treated. I only know for certain 3 people who were in my class who actually have been nice and talked with me. They also let me know what everyone else in the class was saying about me. It even took heaps of convincing to tell one of them that a rumour that was made a few years ago wasn’t true and they said I had said this even after me saying that it had never happened and I had found out that everyone in the class was talking about this rumour. I hate this school even teachers I know have said infront of my class that she hated me and other friends that also left the school because there educational needs weren’t being recognised. And no they don’t have any learning difficulties and are now very ahead in there learning. I find this RIDICULOUS and do not recommend this school to anyone willing to send there children here. And now you heard an experience from a student going here you know that you can actually see through my eyes. Please listen to me. I will write this again and again and again till I’m recognised. Thank you for reading I hope you change your mind about sending your kids here

A great little school with a real community feel and supportive environment. Our two kids love their teachers and friends. In the 6 years we have been at this school, it’s become better resourced and expanded to accommodate varying interests such as coding and chess clubs. Highly recommend it if you are looking for a real immersive bilingual experience.

Despite 2020 being a very disruptive year with 2 terms being taught at home, the school has been well prepared with their response to course work, student progress and support to both students and families. In our experience, the class teacher has gone above and beyond to keep the kids engaged and motivated during remote learning. Communication from the school is clear and it highlights the nice, supportive communal feel of the school. I look forward to the kids returning to school soon for more enjoyable learning and friendships. Das ist gut !!

DSM is a fantastic school. It is one of few schools that offers bilingual education, based on the early immersion concept. This offers a great pathway for kids without any knowledge of German. The school has great educators that are talented, experienced and motivated. They all speak both languages fluently and those who teach the majority of German are native speakers. The school staff and leadership is always helpful and supportive. School leadership and staff always seek improvements and work closely with everyone. The school community is positive and supportive across all grades. Being a smaller school is has a great communal feel. Both of my kids love this school and our family has been on this great journey of education and discovery since 2013.
