Hale School is Western Australia’s oldest, leading boys’ school with a reputation for excellence. Many of Australia’s great leaders are Hale alumni and today, we continue nurturing young men who will make a difference in the world.
Hale School is consistently ranked as one of the top 10 schools in Western Australia, with outstanding academic results.
Our focus is on the particular needs of boys and how they learn best. We cater to their strengths while enhancing their confidence and capacity in areas in need of development.
Of course, boys still need interaction with girls and so Hale has a close connection with its sister school, St Mary’s Anglican Girls’ School.
Hale School is proud to attract families from a wide variety of backgrounds, which enhances the school culture of diversity, inclusiveness, hard work and ambition.
Hale is located in the north-western suburb of Wembley Downs and boasts a sprawling campus surrounded by natural bushland. Hale’s facilities support learning by giving the boys access to multiple sporting fields, well-equipped buildings and performance spaces in a quiet suburban oasis.
Our new award-winning Junior School provides purpose-built spaces for the younger boys. The Junior School has an intimate village feel for its 400 students, with connection to the adjoining natural bushland.
Hale’s Middle School is another modern facility, providing designated learning and recreation spaces for the Year 7 boys, plus access to the larger Senior School.
Hale School has two boarding houses: one for the Year 7 and 8 boys only and another for Year 9 to 12 students.
Our students are supported by teachers who are among the best in their field. They are committed beyond the classroom in mentoring, tutoring, sport coaching and counselling students.
While Hale School is known for academic excellence, we cater to all ability levels and aim to support each boy to reach his personal potential. Dedicated learning support specialists identify and assist students with learning difficulties, both in small group settings and in the mainstream classroom through differentiation.
Hale’s world-class library is open after school each day, and staff and recent Hale graduates are on hand to offer homework assistance for boys in the Middle and Senior Schools.
Hale offers a large range of subjects and has specialist teachers across the school in areas such as Physical Education, the arts (drama, music and visual arts), languages (Mandarin, Japanese and French), religious and values education (RAVE) and outdoor education.
The Hale Institute of Innovation and Research is committed to strengthening and enriching student learning across the school through innovative teaching and learning methods that empower students to identify and solve problems, bridge content across traditional subject domains, and develop a growth mindset. Recent projects include the development of a virtual reality literacy programme, student-driven apps, recording of student radio interviews, and research into the effectiveness of different types of teacher feedback.
In Years 11 and 12, Hale School offers both ATAR and general courses, providing both university and alternative career pathways.
Hale had the highest performing students in 14 subjects in 2021: Accounting and Finance, Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Engineering Studies, French: Second Language, Literature, Materials Design and Technology, Mathematics Applications, Mathematics Methods, Mathematics Specialist, Philosophy and Ethics, Physical Education Studies, Physics.
In addition to ATAR subjects, Hale School also offers selected high-achieving Senior School students the opportunity to study Cambridge Assessment International Education’s General Certificate of Secondary Education courses. The Cambridge subjects provide the opportunity for students to sit examinations in globally recognised courses. The electives currently offered at Hale are additional mathematics, chemistry and physics.
Hale students have the choice of a huge variety of co-curricular options to extend them beyond the classroom.
Sport has always been important at Hale School and we are well known for our sporting facilities and successes. Not only does Hale provide a complete sporting programme, we also cater for the full ability range with many different teams in each sport.
Our music programme is regarded as one of the best in the nation due to its broad offerings, with more than 700 boys involved in the various bands, ensembles and choirs. Some of these are combined with St Mary’s Anglican Girls’ School.
Redfoot Youth Theatre is Hale’s community theatre group, which gives students memorable opportunities for performance, technical production skills and personal development. At least five shows are staged each year, with boys from Hale and girls from other local schools involved in all aspects of the production.
Service Learning is another significant component of Hale School life and an extension of our School motto of ‘Duty’. All students have opportunities to serve others, both inside and outside the school.
Families also value the various tours and student exchanges on offer each year. Sporting, academic, cultural and Service Learning tours provide unique opportunities to connect student learning beyond the classroom.
